GTA Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Accra, Ghana – December 30, 2023

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) marked its 50th Anniversary with a series of vibrant celebrations, culminating in a grand buffet dinner and awards night in Accra. Under the theme “Sustainable and Inclusive Tourism Development: 50 Years and Beyond,” the milestone highlighted the GTA’s enduring commitment to positioning Ghana as a leading tourism destination in Africa.

The anniversary festivities began in April 2023 with a ceremonial launch at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, where the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, unveiled a striking 3D anniversary logo symbolizing the GTA’s golden jubilee. Events throughout the year included the Kwahu Paragliding Festival, industry fun games, a blood donation exercise, a tourism summit, and a float through Accra’s principal streets, showcasing the GTA’s achievements and upcoming initiatives.

A standout event was the industry fun games held on August 19 at the Ridge Church School Astroturf, fostering camaraderie and competition among tourism stakeholders. Despite an unexpected downpour, CEO Akwasi Agyeman announced the rescheduling of the finals to coincide with World Tourism Day on September 27 in Ada, offering participants a chance to explore the region’s scenic beauty.

The celebrations climaxed on December 20 with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commending the GTA for its dynamic leadership and global promotion of the Ghanaian brand. “I applaud the tremendous efforts of the Ghana Tourism Authority, its dedicated staff, led by its dynamic Chief Executive Officer, Akwasi Agyemang, and its partners for the milestones achieved in the last six years,” the President remarked, citing growth in international arrivals, domestic travel, and tourism facilities.

The awards night honored staff and industry players for their unwavering dedication, with Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, emphasizing the GTA’s resilience in enhancing Ghana’s tourism sector. The event also featured the Honorary National Tourism Awards on November 29 at the Accra International Conference Centre, recognizing outstanding contributions in categories such as tourism investments, tour guiding, and academia.

Reflecting on the GTA’s journey, Deputy CEO Ben Anane Nsiah traced its evolution from the Ghana Tourist Control Board in 1973 to its current status as a pivotal regulator of tourism enterprises. He expressed optimism for the future, stating, “With the hard work and cooperation of all concerned, we might deliver a $5 billion GDP contribution to Ghana’s economy.”

As the GTA looks to the next 50 years, its focus remains on sustainable growth, private sector collaboration, and innovative tourism experiences. The authority’s efforts, including the “Year of Return” and “Beyond the Return” initiatives, have solidified Ghana’s reputation as a cultural and historical hub, drawing visitors from across the globe.
