Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association Inaugurated

Accra, Ghana – August 29, 2023

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) proudly inaugurated its Ex-Staff Association in Accra, a significant milestone in its 50th-anniversary celebrations. The event, held as part of the GTA’s golden jubilee, underscores the authority’s commitment to leveraging the expertise of its former employees to advance Ghana’s tourism industry.

The GTA Ex-Staff Association, registered under the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992), aims to foster collaboration between the GTA and its former staff, promoting mutual welfare and harnessing their institutional knowledge to enhance the tourism sector. With a current membership of 73, ranging in age from 60 to 83, the association is led by President Madam Adeline Boateng, former Manager of Quality Assurance and Head of Human Resources at the GTA. Other executives include Vice-President Rev. J.B. Lomo-Mainoo, Gifty Irene Kwansa, Godwin Asante, Kwabena Asante-Donkor, Ben Ohene-Ayeh, Comfort Owusu, and Martin Mireku, all former senior GTA staff with extensive experience in various roles.

Madam Boateng highlighted the association’s origins, noting that the idea was conceived in 2018 by a group of retirees seeking to support each other and contribute to tourism growth. A key focus of the association is advocating for improved road travel safety for both domestic and international tourists. “We feel a compelling responsibility for the safety of tourists beyond the travel business,” Boateng stated, outlining plans to collaborate with vehicle manufacturers, maintenance companies, and relevant ministries to enhance road quality, driver education, and travel safety.

GTA Chief Executive Officer Akwasi Agyeman pledged logistical and financial support for the association’s initiatives, particularly its road safety campaign. “The successes of the GTA hinge on the tireless work of our ex-staff, who laid a strong foundation. Your road safety project is apt, and we will provide resources to ensure its success,” Agyeman affirmed, emphasizing the importance of safe roads to boost tourist confidence and promote domestic tourism.

Seth Adjei Baah, GTA Board Chairman, commended the ex-staff for their foundational contributions, urging them to continue offering their expertise to position Ghana as Africa’s preferred tourism destination by 2024. Former GTA CEO Doreen Owusu-Fianko, a member of the association, encouraged the GTA to define specific roles for ex-staff within the tourism value chain, proposing collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport to advance the road safety project.

The inauguration, attended by GTA management, staff, and industry stakeholders, celebrated the ex-staff’s legacy while setting a forward-looking agenda for their continued involvement. The association’s mentorship, training, and advocacy efforts are expected to strengthen the GTA’s mission to deliver sustainable and inclusive tourism development.
