Tourism Road Safety Project

Road Travel Safety and Tourism in Ghana

As part of our ongoing commitment to the development of Ghana's tourism sector, the Ghana Tourism Authority Ex-Staff Association is proud to launch its Inaugural Project focused on Road Travel Safety and Tourism in Ghana. This initiative seeks to support public education, policy advocacy, and private sector collaboration to improve road safety for both domestic and international tourists.

Background and Rationale

As former staff members of the Ghana Tourism Authority, we take immense pride in the achievements of the institution over the past 50 years. From its strategic rebranding as the GTA to the broader mandate of promoting Ghana’s culture, creative arts, and tourism in partnership with the private sector, we believe our years of service laid part of the foundation for today’s progress.

With the recent Presidential Summit on Tourism reaffirming national commitment to the sector, we recognize the importance of deepening stakeholder engagement and tapping into the wealth of knowledge accumulated by retired practitioners. Our group of seasoned professionals is eager to continue contributing meaningfully to national development.

One area of urgent concern is the safety of travel on Ghana’s roads—a critical component of tourism experience and infrastructure. Statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show that road crashes are the leading cause of death among international travellers. As tourism grows, this issue must be addressed head-on.

Project Goals

  • Promote road travel safety awareness across the country.

  • Advocate for tourist-sensitive transport infrastructure and policies.

  • Empower commercial transport operators and unions with safety education tools.

  • Collaborate with the National Road Safety Authority and allied institutions to amplify public education.

  • Leverage media, technology, and creative communication to disseminate vital road safety information.

Why This Matters

Road crashes are not only a public health and safety issue, but also a major threat to Ghana’s tourism development goals. Loss of lives—many of whom are family providers and international guests—diminishes confidence in Ghana’s transport systems. By addressing this challenge, we contribute to making Ghana a safer and more attractive destination.
